What do you like — Part 2!

It was so much fun hearing from everyone.  So often, one person would mention something, and the comments that followed would be, “Oh yeah, that too!”

So, dear people, here is a HUGE poll.  It was so awesome to take all the ideas and codify them into a poll.  You know, as we do.  There are around 60 answers to this one (and you can choose multiple AND add your own.)  The answers have some crossover, but hey, this is just for fun, not a scientific experiment.

So have some fun!

We’re really interested to see if there are definite patterns among our readers.  The responses are all so diverse and interesting.

Please note – the next story on the RR calendar is already set… this is just for fun and to discuss what you like in general, not a prediction of Raythe’s next story.

What do you like? What’s your M/M romance reader “crack?”

What's your M/M "romance reader crack?"

Have some fun with this! Comments also welcome.

Sounds like you should do a retelling of Aladdin. It would fit a lot of the suggestions in this list!

While I always am eager for ideas, this isn’t actually going to determine what I write next and it wasn’t meant to. For example, though I know mpreg is some people’s catnip, I have NO DESIRE to write a story with it. It’s just not something I’m at all interested in. Same with pirates and a bunch of other stuff listed. But I try to figure out WHY people like these things and see if there’s a way I can add what that essence is to the stories I will write. Though I do have a pretty good idea for an Arabian Nights type of story …

I like what you’re doing. You’re really trying to understand your readers. I really appreciate it and I think your other readers do too. That’s one thing I like about you, other than that you write the stories that I like to read xD

    • Raythe July 28, 2016 at 9:15 pm #

Before I wrote professionally (and a long time after) I would stumble forward with stories, not sure why they resonated with me and definitely not sure why they resonated with readers. But the more stories I wrote, the more comments I got, the more I understood about which stories might work better than others.

For example, mpreg which I’ll never write, still tells me something about what readers MIGHT like in stories without that aspect. Obviously, there’s a kink aspect to it, but I think if you delve deeper you realize what attracts people is a man acting nurturing and, honestly, more like a mom. Most societies, and a lot of our own experiences, show us men who are more distant from their kids than moms and don’t do the gentle loving that most moms do. I think this is what attracts people to this kink. So could I incorporate that into a storyline without mpreg? Yes!

Ahhh I missed putting this in last time, but I would LOVE a fake out story! As in the main character DOSENT end up with his intital love interest. As for the options already presented, I really love all the variety up there, you really listened to your last responses, and it shows. Thank you for being so attentive to your readership!

    • Raythe July 28, 2016 at 10:14 pm #

A fake out story … interesting! I actually faked out myself with Ghost: Hong Kong Triad. I really thought that the character would end up with one of two people and it was a third I hadn’t even intended for him to get together with that person but lightning struck!

Also, and this is interesting to me, I find that you are among the few (at least of the readers I have so far) that actually likes getting something different than what was originally proposed. Even stories where I was clear it would multiple love interests caused issues!

      But I’ll think on this.

Thank you for replying! I didn’t know I was a minority here! Interesting, maybe it’s because I read so much of this stuff I’ve been through all the tropes before.

agreed, that would be a nice change-up

There’s a very real part of me that wants to just click on practically EVERYTHING. Talk about the confidence boost in Raythe we all have. Not only do we trust her to pull off the types of stories we know she writes, we’re throwing all these new ideas at her too! Go Raythe, go! And go Raythe Reign’s fandom, too, for having the courage to put all these fantasies out there!

But yes, thank you to Raythe for thinking up something this genius. So many of us end up on the internet in search of SOMETHING. And so many listen, read or watch passively without feeling the need to explain why this or that connects with us some way, why it holds our attention long after we’ve turned in for the night and keeps us coming back. Trying to determine the WHY of something that is a niche like this is hard. But the underlying threads – personality types that attract us, adventure stories we can immerse ourselves in, escapist fantasies we’ve had since childhood, these are gold.

I know I speak for many of us when I say thanks for doing this!

As I’m learn things as a writer, I discovered what I really loved as a reader and could more easily identify it so I could choose fiction that more hit what I liked.

These ideas that you guys are putting down are really cool b/c they actually strip things down a bit into what you like and then there’s another few layers under that which I want to see so I can make my stories better even if they aren’t EXACTLY what’s been put.

  5. Buddhaali July 28, 2016 at 10:34 pm #

I guess one thing I’d really love to see done in a new story, that a lot of people mention is a strong lead that doesn’t need to be “saved” per se. Two equal partners. This was done so amazingly well in the Pact, that I know its something you do hugely well, Raythe. I want it again! 🙂

Other than that, please surprise us all, because that’s the joy of picking up a new book (or clicking on a new banner on the site). You never really know for sure what’s on the next page. And I know that Raythe Reign will make it worth our wait!

    • Raythe July 28, 2016 at 10:46 pm #

The Pact totally didn’t end up like I originally intended. I was trying to make it more predictable, but it ended up as anything but. Crazy for sure. The idea that both characters can save the other is really a good one in my book.

  6. Ceit July 28, 2016 at 10:56 pm #

I would click practically everything too, just because we know you can deliver spectacularly well, even in the stories where you decide to challenge our expectations !!

    • Raythe July 28, 2016 at 11:25 pm #

I can see a ton of stories here just picking and choosing. What’s funny is there are two ideas I was thinking about (1) Elf one with sort of the idea that an Elven King passes through the veil to Earth as he’s being chased by his enemies and saved by our main guy! misunderstandings of the human world and sword fighting ensue! and (2) assassin with psi powers is hired to kill our main guy, decides to save him (common story) but it’ll be cool, I think.

      • BuddhaAli June 28, 2017 at 8:37 pm #

Went back and looked at this again, because we’ve been talking about all the new stories coming out. I wonder, what if you did an Arabian Nights type story where the djinn was more of an Incubus, with other demonic powers? Like he could grant magical gifts to the summoner, or make predictions, or have far sight, but wasn’t omniscient. Possibly also came to earth in part because of being summoned but also in part because a greater demon sent him there to kill and eat humans.

That might be fun, particularly if the summoner-human had a human (female or male) lover and yet fell for the (male) demon, too?

It almost seems like you could end up with an origin story for Stephanus, if you weren’t careful…

Whatever you end up doing, I’m sure it will be good, but wow, what a wide variety options! What a creative reader base this site has!! I can’t wait to see what decision we all reach and what awesome new stories stem from it.

    • Raythe July 28, 2016 at 11:26 pm #

You guys really have great ideas. It’s a bit like mix and match!

  8. Alondrapop July 29, 2016 at 12:05 am #

I hope you do a interracial couple between a young black teen and a older white man with whichever story you choose to write!

    • Raythe July 29, 2016 at 12:12 am #

I’ve thought about doing more interracial romances for sure!

Ii love ALL of the ideas I saw. I am 1 of those weird people who LOVE things I know I can’t live. You know of all the m/m books I’ve read of threesomes, both men have been buried in the F or M but I’ve never read about a line. Yeah the middle guy would be much happier than the other 2. Lol Thought your idea & suggestions were very on point. Very hard to pick just 1 idea huh? Guess you will have to do a series lol Keep up your outstanding imagination. Luv ya!

This tells me more about my own psychological profile than anything else; also how far I’ve come since even five years ago. A few years ago, I’d say BDSM without questioning if I actually did or why. Now I can’t say that unless it was light bondage, gags, or wax play. Then there were the instances of ‘I like this, just not in an erotic way’, i.e. Space Adventures. A setting does not translate to instant eros. Then there were things I had to pick because I inadvertently have them in the never ending story I’m writing, i.e. ‘Fallen angels / wings, not necessarily with theology’ and ‘demon/human relationship; good and evil are ambiguous concepts’. I’ve never cared much about either from an erotic standpoint, but there they are vaguely in my own story! 😛

Just out of curiosity have you ever read the book series maelstrom by yamila Abraham. It’s got a good story line with strong characters which I personally really love especially when the uke resisted stubbornly hehe. I would say that she is my third favourite yaoi author with rathe being on top. I just love how this website always Keeps me on my toes with all the small twists and turns with the well placed sex scenes. I’m so glad I came across the manga dark earth and followed it to this site. Best discovery ever. Sorry if I went on to long lol
