Introducing Cursed: Smoke, a new “short” story…

Raythe says …

cursed 0 coverI know a lot of people are waiting on Cursed 2, and it is coming along!  But I have something special to share with you.  It’s called Cursed: Smoke.

It’s a short story (about 20k words) in the Cursed Universe that answers the question: What if Nick and Bane met under different circumstances?

Specifically, what if…

Nick Fairfax needs a sugar daddy to pay for his last year of art school.  After being disinherited and kicked out of his house for pursuing his dream of becoming a photographer, Nick heads to the exclusive club, Smoke, where young men sell themselves to the highest bidder.

Nick gets in trouble with a man who won’t take “no” for an answer.  Lord Bane Dunsaney comes to his rescue. But does the mysterious billionaire pose a greater danger to Nick than the one he saved him from?

Where does this story fall into the Cursed timeline?

It doesn’t!  Cursed: Smoke is an alternative timeline, meaning that you can read it at any time and it doesn’t spoil any of the main novels.  But we do recommend you read Cursed: Broken (Book 1) first because you’ll enjoy it more and see some Easter eggs in Smoke.

How long is the story?

This is a short story (only 20k words, which is short for me …).  It only has Nick and Bane meeting and having an interesting time, but it doesn’t answer all the other stuff we know is going on in main story.

Will you continue this short story?

I never say never, but I don’t have any plans to.

How can I get it?

Members of the site and members of any of our mailing lists will get Cursed: Smoke for free!  As always, we want to repay all of you for being a part of Raythe Reign, whether that is by being part of the serial site or buying books individually and keeping in contact with us.

The short story will be available for purchase on Amazon and other third-party retailers.  If you’re not a Member and also not on a Raythe Reign mailing list and want to get Cursed: Smoke free, you can just sign up for one.  (Like getting The Merman 1 free, or trying out the previews for The Abyss or Sanctuary serial stories.)

Cursed: Smoke is not available yet, and we will send it out via email and/or a download page when it’s ready.  If you’ve ever gotten an email from us, don’t worry – you’re on one of our lists, and you won’t miss out.

If you know someone that is curious about Raythe Reign — and Cursed in particular — make sure you tell them how to get this short story free.  We’ll have more information and an official page for it once it’s available for purchase / download.

… Read Smoke last night and was blown away!

While short, it had none of the pacing frustrations that the site-version of Cursed seemed to have (while I love the many-chapter-update system a lot of the time, sometimes the cliffhangers in Cursed seemed forced or the pacing seemed strange if you read it all in one go – which is why its so important when Raythe then turns them into a more polished novel form that smooths out those bumps!). I honestly loved the all-Nick viewpoint, and its singular focus on a pin point period of time. It really helped make this a very powerful short story!

Admittedly, there’s a part of me that likes this version of Bane, maybe even a bit better than the embittered business mogul in the full cursed story. I think both have great merit, but the official full Cursed is closer to Beauty and the Beast, which is why that trope of “forcing the bad deal for business reasons” was used. I get this, but having the “beast-ly” Bane sweep Nick off his feet for a quick scorching night of immediate hotness was pretty a-freaking-mazing.

Wow. Now I’m going to use my lunch break to go re-read it. ^___^

Just waiting on proofreaders then I do the final pass and then it will be formatted. It’s about 100k and ends in a cliffhanger that probably will cause people to break out pitchforks, but it had to be this way.

So any plans on having Cursed #2 on Audible format I’m so looking forward to hearing it. I work on my jewelry making while listening to the stories. I had never known about audible until I got my new PC with windows ten and there it was this beautiful app. My first audible was the Merman Transformation to Landfall. I was hooked no pun intended then I listened to Cursed Broken. I know I can read book two but I find listening brings the story to life. Waiting patiently.

Yes – we have the sample back from the actor, which means he’s making rapid progress. We’ll let everyone know as soon as it’s up.
