Fan Friday: What should we ask Chris Patton?

With the release of The Artifact, we decided to explore the new world of audiobooks and get an actor to read the series aloud.  Having no idea what to expect, we called for auditions, and managed to secure the talent of prominent voice actor Chris Patton!

We had no idea who he was, at first — just that we liked the way he brought the characters to life (especially Branish, the sexy bastard.)  Later, we found out that he had a long history as a voice actor; he is the voice behind many anime characters for the English releases of several series.  (

Hopefully, he’ll have the time to give us an interview in the next week or so, and we’re opening up the topics to our readers and members.

What would you like to ask Chris?  If you have a question for him, post it in the comments below.  You can also cast your vote for one that has already been posted.  If we get a ton, we’ll try to consolidate or choose the popular ones.

How does Chris feel reading aloud this genre for an audiobook. Also, what was his favorite part and what kinda of books does he like.

First, I love audio books. Like I really love them. And after watching some interviews with Chris I could not be more excited at the prospect of his talent reading my favorite RR stories.

I already import my reading material into an iPhone app called Voice Dream (it works really well) with the “Laura” voice pack so that I can listen to them in the car or at work etc and nobody is the wiser im getting by BL fix. =)

So this topic is important to me, I have to agree with Topaz’s question. If the reader does not love the material like the fans do, they are less likely to stick around and read more in the future.

I have found one of the more disruptive experiences with audio books is when the narrator changes from chapter to chapter, or book to book in a long series.

Chris is obviously a talented voice actor, with a good body of work already under his belt. One important production question is how much voice acting will be involved (will you guys want to read each character in their own voice and how much development is required there).

Very excited, please keep us in the loop!

What made him want to be a voice actor ? And how?

What I’d like to ask him is how he came to know that Raythe Reign was looking for a voice actor, and what made him want to apply?

I want to know that too. How he knew about Raythe Reign and what made him apply.

Also, voice acting for audiobooks is different then voice acting for animae because in animation, you have the visual cues to know when to speak, and to give you insight into the character. Also in animation, there is usually one actor for each major part, but in audiobooks, one actor plays all the parts.

So, I want to know about his plan/process for bringing each character to life, and any challenges he thinks he will have with regards to the characters.

Who is his favorite character and what does he like about them?
What does he think is his favorite characters biggest challenge in the story?
What does he like/ doesn’t like about the story, or any particular character?

We put the book up on ACX, which is Amazon’s audiobook arm (it’s Audible). So voice actors can see when a book is available to audition for. We took sections of the finished book where the main characters speak, a romantic part, and a scary part. So I heard him play Branish, Sean and Dane. He also alters his voice when he does a chapter in Sean’s POV as opposed to Dane’s. His Branish is sexy as hell.

So Chris Patton has rave reviews from his narration of Josh Lanyon ‘s Adrein English books so that is exciting. I also listen to a lot of audiobooks and having a diversity of voices and having the voice fit the character is soooo important. I’m so glad you are considering this. But pls pls make sure the files can be downloaded onto an iPhone I listen to audiobooks during my commute and while traveling, not on the computer. Thanks for asking for comments.

Why he wants the job to begin with? What is he hoping to get out of it in the end? Does he understand how important your work is to your followers? Would he do this type of job for less pay?

I would love to know what he says to these being asked. More so the last one because most people may only be after the pay in the end and not care to much about the job and what it may mean for other.
